How to Persuade Like a Pro
Persuasion skills are used everyday. You can see a small child trying to persuade their mother to buy them another toy. “But mom please? It’s the last one!”…”Okay, but no more toys until Christmas.” Or you see it when you are inviting your friend to go with you somewhere they are reluctant to go too. “Come on, you have to come with me.”…”No I’m too tired”…”But think of all the cool things you will see. I’ll even get you your own t-shirt.”…”Okay, fine I’ll go.”

Maybe you aren’t persuaded as easily as some of the individuals noted here. But you do know that there is a certain knack for persuasion where if done correctly, people understand your point of view and will seek your insight. Listed below are three persuasion traits using different examples.

3 Ways to Persuade Like a Pro

  1. Have Confidence. In order to persuade anyone of anything, an individual must have confidence. Confidence in themselves, in the subject they are speaking about, and in how they carry themselves. One way to build confidence in real estate is to convince a seller to list their home with you. There are real estate agents all over the country and the seller chooses to list with you. That has to build your confidence and credibility as an agent!
  2. Exude Knowledge. Confidence can only take you so far if you do not have the knowledge to back up your statements. Knowledge is the second most important skill needed for persuasion because facts are based on truth rather than emotion. As an experienced (or not experienced) real estate agent you know that it is important for a seller to declutter their home and use staging to increase the chance of a potential buyer. The seller may not know this information and they are relying on you to help them.
  3. Be Respectful. You must respect the other person’s opinion. It may not be the same as yours but take their opinion into consideration because it is valuable to that individual. Buyers will visit a home and then have second thoughts if it really is a good time to buy in the current market. Although you may not agree with the buyer, you respect their decision and have created enough trust that you will wait until they are ready to buy a home.

Persuasion is an important skill to have. Each trait is great to have on their own but using all three can truly enhance your power of persuasion. Each trait takes practice. Confidence, knowledge and respect all take time to build and must constantly be worked on. Persuading a seller to list their home with you is easier when you have the confidence to know that you can sell their home at a reasonable price. You have the knowledge to know what platforms to use to ensure the seller’s home is seen online/in-person wherever possible. The respect for the seller that you want to help them sell their home and create a lasting relationship with them. Implement these three traits into your life by applying them wherever you can and see how persuasion is everywhere.
